Kay Matschullat has created and directed theater with some of the world’s greatest artists and writers. She directed the World premiere of Pulitzer Prize winner Derek Walcott’s TO DIE FOR GRANADA and the New York premiere of his PANTOMIME, as well as the World premiere of Ariel Dorfman’s WIDOWS at Williamstown Theater Festival. At Williamstown, she also served for 4 years as Director of the Second Stage, originating the Festival’s new play program, producing premieres by Tennessee Williams, Trevor Griffiths, and A.R. Gurney.
Ms. Matschullat most recently directed END OF BEGINNINGS/BEGINNING OF ENDS at the Czech Art Center in New York – a collage with two Czech rock bands and 6 actors. She also directed in New York the English language premiere of Vaclav Havel’s THE CONSPIRATORS. She is currently creating a music theater piece with Liz Swados, DANCE OF DESIRE, with the support of the Lark Theater. In the inaugural season of Red Bull Theater’s IN THE RAW series, she directed her own free adaptation of deMusset’s DON’T FUCK WITH LOVE. Ms. Matschullat has directed repertory and new plays in production and workshop in major theatres around the country, including Boston Shakespeare, SouthCoast Repertory, Actors Theatre of Louisville, and the New York Shakespeare Festival. She has also directed her own adaptations of Moliere and Brecht plays at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts.
In television, she has served as Producer/Director/Writer of nationally broadcast videos for the National Organization of Women, Consultant for the Academy-Award nominated film documentary WAR ROOM, Researcher on two PBS award winning series, EYES ON THE PRIZE and VIETNAM: A TELEVISION HISTORY, and on BILL MOYERS’ JOURNAL.
Ms. Matschullat is a full-time faculty member at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts. Previously, she taught at Princeton University Program in Theater and Dance. She has been awarded numerous grants, including a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship and Dean’s Development Grants at NYU. She is a graduate, magna cum laude, of Harvard College, holds a Masters of Arts degree from NYU and is currently a Fulbright Senior Specialist. |
