Red Bull Theater seeks a dynamic and motivated Managing Director to lead the company into its third decade of revitalizing the classics for today’s audiences. 

 

The Managing Director has joint responsibility for executing the mission of the company with the Artistic Director. The Managing Director's primary role is to guide and manage the strategic growth, external image and brand, and internal operations of Red Bull Theater. The Managing Director leads the marketing, financial, and strategic decisions of the company that allow Red Bull Theater to accomplish its mission. The ideal candidate possesses an entrepreneurial spirit, excellent communication skills, experience in the non-profit cultural sector, with a strong ability and desire to evaluate needs, devise a course of action, and take the bull by the horns to accomplish that course.

As the company emerges artistically and financially sound following the pandemic shutdown, we are ready to begin actively planning for our Twentieth Anniversary Season, and beyond. DETAILED JOB DESCRIPTION Job Description 

 

Reporting to the Board of Trustees, the Managing Director will collaborate with Founder and Artistic Director Jesse Berger on all aspects of company leadership and execution.  

 

The Managing Director is an empowered, full-time leadership position charged to strategize, guide and execute in these major areas (more details below):

The ideal candidate will be

  • Committed to an equitable and inclusive community.

  • Skilled at translating artistic needs and values into institutional strategies and specific operating plans.

  • Adept at diverse communications with funders, donors, artists and other company stakeholders.

  • Proficient with (or eager to master) relevant and emerging technologies, including Google Suite, AudienceView (Ovation), CMS platforms, Wix, and MailChimp, Zoom, Livestream, and other cloud-based platforms.

  • A graceful multitasker with the flexibility to excel in a quickly changing work environment.

  • Talented at building and cultivating relationships with individuals and other organizations.

  • Collaborative and joyful in their work with others.

 

The ideal candidate will likely have

  • 5+ years of arts management experience, or MBA, MFA or equivalent.

  • A track record of fundraising success via direct solicitations, written proposals, and special events.

  • A track record in strong fiscal management, budgeting and understanding of generally accepted accounting principles.

  • A track record of marketing and sales success.

  • Experience working with and engaging a Board of Directors.

  • Experience managing and leading a staff or team.

The candidate hired might also be 

  • Passionate for classical theater with a working knowledge of the plays and writers at the heart of the company’s mission.

  • Experienced with season planning.

  • Proficient with Adobe Creative Suite, including Photoshop and Indesign.

  • Possessed of an aesthetic eye and skill for the creation of compelling collateral.

  • Experienced with producing, general managing or line producing theatrical productions.

  • Knowledgeable and experienced with applicable union contracts and industry standards.

  • Comfortable with public speaking and being a primary public face for the company. 

 

JOB DETAILS

 

Financial and organizational planning  

  • Oversees long-range financial and organization activity planning. 

  • Ensures that projects are completed on time, on budget, and to organizational standards. 

  • Forges new relationships for the organization among donors, partners, and vendors.

  • Supervises the day-to-day financial and organizational management with the support of the General Manager.

 

Board management and development

  • Providing clear communication and creating plans of annual support.

  • Crafting course and agendas for the organization’s quarterly meetings. 

  • Prospecting and cultivating future trustees. 

 

Marketing and Communications

  • Develop and implement marketing and branding efforts for the company and all its programming.

  • Craft or curate graphic designs, creating compelling collateral with an aesthetic eye for each endeavor.

  • Craft copy for communications of all varieties.

  • Stay current on trends and work to better reach and grow audiences.

  • Create and manage content for all social media platforms, including Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter.

  • Enrich SEO and paid digital placement strategies.

  • Design and management of internal eblasts.

  • Oversee, manage, and regularly update RedBullTheater.com.

 

Fundraising

  • Advance and expand the contributed revenue available through day-to-day management of individual giving and subscriber relations, prospecting of new opportunities and activities, and the creation of fundraising events including the annual Gala Benefit. 

  • Collaborate with the Artistic Director in the area of development fundraising.

  • Forge new relationships for the organization among donors.

  • Maintain and cultivate donor and membership relations. 

  • Work in tandem with the Artistic Director and Grant Writers on proposals and reports. 

  • Analysis of patron and donor data to strategic ends.

  • Planning and overseeing execution of fundraising events.

 

Producing and program development

  • Collaborate with the Artistic Director in producing an average of two annual Off Broadway productions, regularly scheduled readings, and ancillary outreach and engagement activities.

  • Oversight of the General Manager, hiring processes, artist, union and vendor contracts.

  • Supervise the Associate Producer (and new roles created to facilitate and create engagement activities), providing general oversight of program management and program development.

  • Creation and stewardship of new initiatives.

 

Company administration 

  • Supervise staff and operations.

  • Manage human resources.

  • Manage information technology.

 

General

  • While this position has a broad mandate and a range of responsibilities, there is room for tailoring to individual skill sets and capabilities, and providing opportunities for professional development and growth.

  • This job operates in a multi-faceted work environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, and all current and evolving online and other technological capabilities. 

  • This position requires occasional weekend and evening work. 

  • Other related duties may be required. 

  • We hope to engage the successful candidate by late spring 2022.

Red Bull Theater serves adventurous theatergoers with Off-Broadway Productions, Revelation Readings, and the annual Short New Play Festival. We offer outreach programs including Shakespeare in Schools bringing professional actors and teaching artists into public school classrooms, Bull Sessions, free post-play discussions with top scholars, and Acting Intensives in classical actor training led by veteran theater professionals. Since 2020, the company has developed a strong online presence with Online Readings, RemarkaBULL Podversations, Classes, Seminars, and streamed Productions. Our online audience has reached over 100,000 people in the past two years. The company’s unique programming has received ongoing critical acclaim, and has been recognized with Lortel, Drama Desk, Drama League, Calloway, Off Broadway Alliance, and Obie nominations and Awards. 


Budget, Staff and Office / Remote Work

The company’s annual budget is $1.5M. We currently have a staff of 4 full-time employees, and work together in an open-plan 1,000 square foot open office space in Chelsea. Remote work is part of our operational routines on an as-needed basis.

 

Compensation Package

This is a full-time, competitively salaried position with benefits.  Benefit package includes health and dental insurance reimbursement, all regular holidays, a generous vacation policy, and an opt-in 401k with a match after one-year.
