For four hundred years, Shakespeare’s immortal words have had us rolling in the aisles, crying into our drinks, or contemplating life's great mysteries. Learn how to make Shakespeare’s language jump off the page and invoke delight or dole with Olivier and Obie award winning Shakespeare star CHUKWUDI IWUJI.

 

In this class you will learn how to demystify Shakespeare and his verse and find the internal truth of the character. By the end of the class you will leave armed with additional tools to attack and Shakespeare performance with confidence. You will learn that the tools for finding truth in Shakespeare translate to all types of acting - contemporary to classic and stage to screen.

Essential Question:

How do you approach Shakespeare’s text with knowledge and confidence, utilizing the clues and tools in the verse to find the dynamic truth of your character and situation? What aspects of an actor’s preparation are most essential when approaching Shakespeare performance? How do you engage honestly with Shakespeare’s text in high stress environments such as auditions or self-tapes.

 

Course Objectives:
  • Demystify Shakespeare’s words.

  • Learn how to use Shakespeare’s verse, text and rhetoric to find clues about your character

  • Prepare one monologue that you are confident and excited to use in audition settings

  • Shed light on the difference of ‘acting for the camera’ and ‘acting for the stage’

Instructor:

An extraordinary actor both on screen and on stage, CHUJWUDI IWUJI continues to captivate audiences with his versatility and establish himself as one to watch.

 

Iwuji could most recently be seen starring opposite John Cena in James Gunn’s spinoff series PEACEMAKER for HBO Max and DC. He will reunite with director James Gunn and make his debut in the Marvel universe, starring in GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL 3, the next installment in the blockbuster franchise.

 

Iwuji can also be seen in the BBC drama THE SPLIT which just released its third and final season. Previously, he played the lead role in the Netflix feature SHINE YOUR EYES and appeared opposite Sasha Lane and Patrick Schwarzenegger in the thriller DANIEL ISN’T REAL. He also starred in Michael Morrissey’s THE GIRL WHO GOT AWAY, as well as the Emmy-nominated Amazon limited series THE UNDERGROUND RAILROAD for director Barry Jenkins. Other television appearances include WHEN THEY SEE US, DESIGNATED SURVIVOR, QUANTICO, THE BLINDSPOT, MADAM SECRETARY, and DOCTOR WHO.

 

Iwuji’s film credits include Netflix’s BARRY, Chad Stahelski’s JOHN WICK: CHAPTER 2 opposite Keanu Reeves, A WOMAN A PART, NOW: IN THE WINGS OF A WORLD STAGE, the multi-award winning EXAM, and FALL TO RISE.

 

An accomplished theater veteran, Iwuji starred in OTHELLO for The Public Theatre’s Shakespeare in the Park as well as in ANTONY AND CLEOPATRA, KING LEAR, and HAMLET. His performance in THE LOW ROAD, directed by Michael Greif, earned him an Obie Award, as well as 2018 Lucille Lortel and Drama League nominations. An Associate Artist of the prestigious Royal Shakespeare Company for his numerous Shakespearean performances, he has also received two Olivier awards for his titular role as HENRY VI in the RSC’s 2009 productions of parts I, II, and III.

 

Other stage credits include the titular role in the Public Theatre’s HAMLET directed by Patricia McGregor; Ivo van Hove’s OBSESSION opposite Jude Law, and HEDDA GABLER opposite Ruth Wilson, both for The National Theatre; The Public Theatre’s productions of KING LEAR and ANTONY AND CLEOPATRA; Theatre for a New Audience’s TAMBURLAINE directed by Michael Boyd; and the Old Vic’s RICHARD III directed by Sam Mendes.

 

Iwuji is a founding member of Chudor House Productions, his family’s production and management company. He currently resides in New York.

Preparation:

You should prepare a classical monologue you wish to work on. 

 

Technical Needs:

You will need a computer that can support Zoom as well as a decent webcam and microphone (built-in are acceptable). You will need steady internet that can support video conferencing. A front light is recommended as well as a quiet space.
