Set in the vibrant diversity of 1840's New Orleans, The Country Wife features a sizzling modern score and irreverently explores the question of who owns the stories we call classics. This raucous musical reimagining of William Wycherley's classic Restoration Comedy by award winning writing team Richard Maltby Jr. and David Shire is an EVENT not to be missed. Join us for the New York premiere of this exciting new musical in a ONE-NIGHT-ONLY benefit concert.

This special event will raise funds for RED BULL THEATER, New York’s “most exciting classical theater” (Time Out), supporting our Off-Broadway productions, award-winning Revelation Reading series, and education and accessibility programs including Shakespeare in Schools. RICHARD MALTBY, JR. - Broadway: Conceived and directed two Tony Award winning musicals: Ain't Misbehavin' (1978, also Tony Award for Best Director) and Fosse (1999, also Tony nomination, Best Director). Director/lyricist: Baby (1983, Tony nominations, Best Score, Best Director; director/co-lyricist: Song & Dance (1986, Tony nominations, Best Score, Best Director); co-lyricist: Miss Saigon (London 1990 and New York 1991, Evening Standard Award, Best Musical; Tony nominations, Best Musical, Best Score); lyricist: Big (1996 and London 2019, Tony nominations, Best Musical, Best Score); director: Ring of Fire, (2006); co-lyricist: The Pirate Queen (2007); director: The Story of My Life (2009). Off-Broadway: director/lyricist Starting Here, Starting Now (1977); Closer Than Ever, (1989 and 2013, Outer Critics Circle Award: Best Revival of a Musical). DAVID SHIRE - An Oscar and Grammy winner and multiple Tony and Emmy nominee, Shire has composed prolifically for the theater, films, television and recordings. Broadway: Baby, Big. Off-Broadway: Starting Here, Starting Now, Closer Than Ever, The Sap of Life, Urban Blight, How Do You Do, I Love You. Regional: Take Flight, Sousaztska and Waterfall. Numerous film scores include Norma Rae (Academy Award, Best Song), The Conversation, All the President’s Men, The Taking of Pelham 1-2-3, Zodiac, Return To Oz, and Saturday Night Fever (two Grammys). His many television scores have earned five Emmy nominations. Songs recorded by Barbra Streisand, Melissa Manchester, Jennifer Warnes, BillyPreston & Syreeta, Glen Campbell, Te Kawana, June Andrews, Patti LuPone among many others.  He is a member of the Council of the Dramatists Guild of America. He and Richard Maltby have recently completed the first 64 years of their continuous collaboration.
