INTRODUCTION TO TEACHING CLASSICAL TEXTS IN NYC CLASSROOMS

Class size is limited to 16 participants | $75 per student
Join company members Alice Renier and Kea Trevett for a practical crash course in teaching artistry in NYC classrooms, with a focus on using theatrical principles to introduce middle & high school students to classical texts through performance.

Course Objectives:

Learn how to use Apocalyptic Artists Ensemble’s teaching framework to structure and implement a lesson plan suitable for NYC classrooms

Explore how to teach Shakespeare’s verse and language to young learners in an engaging and inspiring way
-
Get hands on experience planning and leading lessons and activities

Learn about applying the Southern Poverty Law Center’s Social Justice Learning Standards to your personal teaching pedagogy

Receive an introduction to consent-based/ brave space classroom practices
-
Receive a teacher training certification from the company, and an invitation to audition for Apocalyptic’s teaching artist roster for the upcoming school year

ABOUT APOCALYPTIC ARTISTS:
Apocalyptic Artists is an ensemble of multidisciplinary theatre makers committed to shaping the future of classical theatre, making it accessible for all. We produce new and innovative adaptations, honor artists with diverse identities and experiences, and provide inspirational programming for young people. In Spring of 2026 Apocalyptic will tour a Shakespeare show for young audiences to NYC schools, produced in collaboration with Red Bull Theater, featuring an ensemble of actor-teachers, who will teach in-class workshops to support the production. Instructors:
KEA TREVETT is a theater artist, filmmaker, and educator. Over the past decade, Kea has taught and developed curriculum for theaters and arts & community organizations across NYC, including Classic Stage Company, Classical Theatre of Harlem, 92Y, Theatre For A New Audience and Lincoln Center. She also teaches Theater & Screenwriting for Sarah Lawrence. Since 2021 Kea has been a thought partner on Shakespeare Center of LA’s Shakespeare & Social Justice Initiative, for whom she will lead a CTLE course for English classroom teachers this fall. Kea is a founding member of Apocalyptic Artists Ensemble, for whom she recently directed a mini series adaptation of Shakespeare’s As You Like It, and an NYC school tour of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, co-produced with Red Bull theater. Kea is an Outfest Screenwriting Fellow, a NYSCA Support for Artists grantee, and a NYFA NYC Women’s Fund recipient. www.keatrevett.com

ALICE RENIER (she,her) is a theater artist and educator who specializes in working with heightened text. She has served as an arts education administrator and teacher for The Public Theater, Classic Stage Company, Red Bull Theater, and Columbia University. She is currently collaborating with The Classical Theatre of Harlem to develop a library of socially conscious study guides for the most studied classic plays in Western literature. She served as acting coach for the first national tours of American Girl: Live! and Bandstand. In Fall 2025 she will become a certified facilitator with Alchemy Inc, a nonprofit that uses the power of myth and storytelling to mentor young people and adults. In addition to her work in theatre, she is a certified yoga and mindfulness instructor. She is a founding member of Apocalyptic Artists Ensemble, for whom she co-directed the 2021 filmed adaptation of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. ​Schedule:
Thursday, September 25 | 6:00 PM - 9:00 PM - Class 1:
In this class, students will experience a lesson plan as participants, exploring Apocalyptic Artists’ approach to building an ensemble in any classroom, and introducing NYC grade school learners to classic texts through a theatrical framework. Students will learn how to create a lesson plan using a structure and teaching pedagogy developed over 2 decades of industry experience.

Friday, September 26 | 6:00 PM - 9:00 PM - Class 2:
Day two is a laboratory for teachers in training to practice implementing activities and demo lessons in a supportive environment, participate in each others’ lessons, and receive feedback from Apocalyptic’s master teachers.

Preparation:
You should have a fully memorized classical monologue you wish to work on.
​
Dress:
Comfortable clothing that you can move and breathe freely in, sneakers, a notebook and a water bottle are strongly encouraged..
